Orthopedic Trauma in Austin, TX
Urgent & Expert Care for Complex Musculoskeletal Injuries
When Unexpected Injury Occurs
Orthopedic trauma is characterized by any severe injury to the musculoskeletal system—including bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments. Whether it’s a sudden fall, a motor vehicle accident, or a high-impact sports injury, trauma requires immediate, expert intervention to ensure proper healing and long-term function. At Austin Orthopedic Institute, we recognize that trauma doesn’t happen on a schedule. That is why we prioritize urgent access, offering same-day and next-day appointments to address fractures and dislocations before they become chronic problems.
Signs You Should Seek Treatment
Seek immediate orthopedic evaluation if you experience:
Visible deformity or misalignment of a limb
Inability to bear weight on a leg or foot
Intense pain that prevents movement of a joint
Numbness or tingling following an impact (potential nerve involvement)
Significant swelling and bruising that appears rapidly
A “pop” or “snap” followed by immediate loss of function
Open wounds near a suspected fracture
Persistent pain from an old injury that didn’t heal correctly

Our Approach to Care
Urgent Access
We understand that trauma is an emergency. We offer same-day and next-day appointments and coordinate closely with local emergency rooms and urgent care centers to ensure you see a specialist immediately.
Conservative Stabilization
Not every fracture requires surgery. We utilize advanced casting, bracing, and custom splinting techniques to stabilize injuries and allow the body’s natural healing process to take place under expert supervision.
Advanced Surgical Fixation
When surgery is required, our fellowship-trained surgeons utilize the latest in Internal Fixation (ORIF), including specialized plates, screws, and intramedullary nails to restore perfect anatomical alignment.
Post-Traumatic Reconstruction
For injuries that didn’t heal correctly the first time, we offer elective reconstruction, including corrective osteotomies and joint replacements, to restore function and eliminate chronic pain.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
Before Your Visit
Because trauma is often urgent, we prioritize your imaging. We highly encourage you to utilize our complimentary MRI, X-ray, and CT scan review service. If you have already visited an Emergency Room or Urgent Care, send us your images immediately. One of our board-certified surgeons will personally review them to determine if you need immediate surgical intervention or if the injury can be stabilized conservatively.
During Your Visit
Urgent Assessment – We perform a focused physical exam to check for nerve function, blood flow, and joint stability.
Stabilization – If the injury is non-surgical, we will provide on-site casting or bracing.
Surgical Planning – For complex fractures, we use advanced 3D computerized planning to map out the placement of plates and screws before you ever enter the operating room.
Frequently Asked Questions
If there is an open wound with bone visible or life-threatening injury, go to the ER. For closed fractures and dislocations, calling AOI for a same-day appointment often allows you to bypass the ER wait and see a specialist immediately.
Most bones take 6 to 8 weeks to knit back together, but full strength and return to sports can take 3 to 6 months depending on the severity and location of the injury.
This is arthritis that develops specifically because of an old injury. If a fracture involved a joint surface, the cartilage may wear down faster, leading to pain years later. We specialize in managing this through injections or joint replacement.
Almost always. Once the bone is stable, physical therapy is vital to restore the range of motion in the joints that were “frozen” during the casting or bracing period.
A clean break (simple fracture) is a single snap. A complex fracture (comminuted) involves the bone breaking into several pieces, which often requires surgical plates and screws to hold the alignment.
Yes. We use bone grafting, specialized growth stimulants, and revision surgery to restart the healing process in bones that failed to knit together initially.
Not necessarily. First-time dislocations are often treated with a “reduction” (putting it back in place) and bracing. However, recurrent dislocations usually indicate ligament tears that require surgical repair.
Yes. We offer complimentary reviews of your imaging. Our surgeons can provide a second opinion on whether surgery is necessary or if a different surgical approach might be better.
