Your First Visit: What to Expect at a Hip Specialist Consultation

Taking the first step toward addressing persistent hip pain can feel daunting, but a consultation with a specialist is the single most important move toward lasting relief and improved mobility. Hip pain can stem from a wide range of issues, from arthritis to injuries, and pinpointing the exact cause is key. This initial appointment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to uncover that root cause. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more prepared and confident as we begin this journey to better health together.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To make the most of your consultation, a little preparation can be very helpful. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for an easy examination of your hip area. It is also wise to bring a current list of all your medications and any previous medical records or imaging (like X-rays) related to your hip pain. Most importantly, take a moment beforehand to think about your symptoms and write down any questions you may have for the doctor.

Discussing Your Medical History

Your appointment will begin with a thorough conversation about your health. A detailed history is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools. We will want to understand your pain completely, so expect questions like:

  • When did the pain start, and was it caused by an injury?
  • Where is the pain located? (e.g., groin, side of the hip, buttock)
  • Does the pain radiate down your leg?
  • What does the pain feel like? (e.g., sharp, dull, aching)
  • What activities make it worse or better?
  • Does it affect your ability to sleep or perform daily tasks?

The Physical Examination

Next, your orthopedic hip doctor will conduct a focused physical exam. This hands-on assessment is crucial for evaluating your joint’s function. We will start by observing your gait (how you walk) to check for limping or other abnormalities. You will be asked to move your hip through its full range of motion so we can identify any limitations or pain triggers. The doctor will also use palpation—gently pressing on different areas around the hip—to locate sources of tenderness and check for signs of inflammation.

Diagnostic Imaging and Tests

While a physical exam provides valuable information, we often need a closer look at the structures inside the joint. Based on your symptoms, we may order imaging tests to confirm a diagnosis. X-rays are the most common first step, as they are excellent for visualizing bones and can reveal issues like hip arthritis, fractures, or bone spurs. If we suspect a problem with the soft tissues, an MRI may be recommended to get a detailed view of the cartilage, labrum, tendons, and muscles.

Developing a Treatment Plan & Setting Goals

After gathering all the necessary information from your history, exam, and imaging, your specialist will discuss the findings with you. We will explain your diagnosis in clear, understandable terms and outline a personalized treatment plan. This is a collaborative process where we discuss your personal goals. Do you want to return to a specific sport? Or simply walk without a limp?

Your plan will always focus on the most effective, least invasive options first. This may include conservative treatments like physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, or activity modification. For some conditions, injections may be recommended. If surgery is a potential option, we will discuss the details of procedures like hip arthroscopy or hip replacement.
